Members of The Addams Family cast paid tribute to their late co-star Raul Julia at LA Comic Con on Saturday 5 October.
The cast reunited for a panel at the convention to share their memories of the two films in which they played the kooky family unit, 1991’s The Addams Family and 1993’s Addams Family Values. Present were Anjelica Huston (who played Morticia Addams), Christina Ricci (Wednesday Addams), Christopher Lloyd (Uncle Fester), Jimmy Workman (Pugsley) and Carel Struycken (Lurch).
Julia portrayed patriarch Gomez Addams in the films, and passed away in 1994.
Of the late actor, Entertainment Weekly reports, Huston said: “He was the perfect gentleman. He was always the first on set and the last to leave. He was a great dancer. I’d get really grumpy around dancing rehearsals, which I felt were unnecessary since I was such an excellent dancer. But he would insist on being there and staying all the way through.”
She continued: “He’d always sing, between scenes and between takes. He always sang full opera! He kept us entertained.”
Both The Addams Family and Addams Family Values were directed by Barry Sonnenfeld, and based on characters created by cartoonist Charles Addams.
The franchise has seen a resurgence in popularity recently due to Tim Burton’s Netflix series Wednesday, which sees Jenna Ortega step into the role that was previously Ricci’s.
Some of the cast spoke to the ongoing love for the Addams’ among younger audiences during the panel, with Huston saying it’s “because we’re doing all the wrong things and getting a lot of attention for it.”
Ricci shared an anecdote of showing her performance as Wednesday to her child: “I remember showing my son The Addams Family when he was 6 and he just kept looking at me and saying, ‘Oh Mom, you’re so naughty’. Like, he was thrilled that all these people were so naughty, that he couldn’t believe it.”
Netflix’s Wednesday is set to return for a second season in 2025, the first trailer for which dropped recently.
